I am building an application for the intranet of my company, this application that will make it is to show a list of options to those that he/she has authorization a predetermined user.

Which server platform are you using? You can retrieve user name on Apache using $PHP_AUTH_USER and on IIS using $REMOTE_USER but there are certainly differences in how they work and how they allow access to underlying stuff.
