Session variables

Hi All,

I am very new to PHP. I am working on a web application that needs to store the logged in users id ( numeric ) and the user type ( i.e. SuperUser or Normal User ) and it should be available throughout all the pages. I don't want to propogate the id and the user type through the URL. I tried using Session variables but it does not work for me. The values stored in the session variables is lost whenever I go to the next page. I know I must be doing something really stupid, but I have no idea what. Can some body out there help me on this one.

Hi,

I am stuck with the same problem ('have to pass variables to pages and I loose my session'). If someone helps you with this problem, would you please foreward the answer to me?

Trying placing this statement at the top of every page, after you have registered your variables.

<?php
session_start();
?>

Also remember that there can be no blank spaces at the start or end of your code. i.e. If your last line of code is line#153, that should be your last line of code. If you have one blank line (line#154) it will mess it up.

Hi Mike,

Thanx for the help. I have something to add to as well. Only starting the session does not help. We need to register the session variables in all the pages as well. Sometimes, the session variables lose the data when we just start the session. I hope my input is of some help to you.

I am stuck on the same exact problem as well. I have a first page setup for the user to enter their username/password, and on my second page it verifies it - if the login is successful, it sets $loginuser to their username. Then, on the third page, after I session_register("loginuser"); the variable is registered but it is empty! Has anyone found a solution for this problem yet?

Test to make the functions global after registering them...

Having global variables are not exactly good programming style and should be avoided but I don't know any better way to avoid this. If you do please let me know.

such as:
function1(){
global $USER_ID;
session_start();
session_register('USER_ID');
$USER_ID = $username;
} //end function1

function2(){
global $USER_ID;
/
do something
/
} //end function2
