I want to have a search capability on my site for visitors to search the site for certain keywords. Example would be to allow the user to type 'travel' to search the site for the word travel in any .htm document. Well, how do I do that and how do I exclude searching some directories and file types. There must be an already done script that does this in php. I found a perl script that does the search, but I want to stick with php since all my pages are php.

There is a search engine done in PHP that comes with a site indexer and it's super easy to install, edit, and use. It's called Site Search by David Broker. Get it at http://www.warpedweb.net/php/.

Thanks for your reply. My server is runnign php3 and the search engine you mentioned uses php4. Do you know of any search engines that use php3. Or, is it hard to rewrite this one in php3.

I do not know of any search engines that are this good that run on PHP3, however, the coding for the search looks quite simple, I imagine it could be rewritten for PHP3 quite easily, allthough I do not have a refference for PHP3 so I am not sure.
I think that the need for PHP4 is really just for the indexer script as this is a pretty complicated script. I imagine you could index your site on your computer (running PHP4) then try the search on your server. It's worth a try!
