stopping 'back' button

After managing to get my database to update a problem occurred to me....

In my system the user presses confirm order and is sent to a 'thanks for the order' type page. This is fine, however, there is nothing to stop them pressing their browser's 'back' bottum and confirm the order again. This operation results in a double order. Worse still, it circumvents my validation. Does anyone have a solution? It sounds like a fairly common issue. I'd like to keep the solution purely PHP if possible.

Hi,

that needs quite some logic on the serverside.
Because the only way is to save a "state" kind of value where you make shure to keep track what the user has been doing and in what process he is right now!

Are you using a DB? How is it set up? Maybe you could include a field called something like 'confirm', which is updated with a value whenever an order is confirmed. Then include a check in the confirm script making sure that the order has not allready been confirmed.

What you (both) said makes sense. I was sort of hoping to redirect them somehow. I actually still have another unresolved issue regarding sending an order confirmation e-mail to the customer. I think I may use this to redirect them to a page which encourages them to link back to the homepage.

They will still be able to press 'back' and double order - but they'll get two confirmation e-mails as well.

You know, you could always have the confirmation page appear in a pop-up window, which would give you much more versatility in navigation. My company has something similar set-up internally, and it works like a charm.

Best yet, it only requires some very simply Javascripting to accomplish correctly.
