Is there a PHP variable or function that contains the IP address of a user that is viewing a/my site???

$REMOTE_ADDR contains the IP address, and you can use gethostbyaddr($REMOTE_ADDR) to get the host.

I guess you don't have the php manual handy then? I downloaded it in chm format (windoze help file thing), and I can just open it, type "IP" and it gives a list of all pages including ip. $REMOTE_ADDR is in the "Predefined Variables" page. It's really handy to have as a reference!
