is it really as easy to install a secure server as just installing apache with the open_ssl module? it sounds to good to be true. if it is my opinion of this open-source phenomenon is growing exponentially.

Yes, the software installation is roughly as easy as the ordinary installation of Apache (you need openssl, mod_ssl and apache).

The hard part is to get the certificate stuff right. And for this, you need to read the mod_ssl documentation, especially the FAQ.

A warning:
A secure server cannot be started automatically: You need to enter a passphrase when the program is started. This also means that you should be careful with log rotation scripts (it's not healthy for a secure server to receive a SIGHUP signal).
