How do I keep field values?

I have a form page with 3 text fields for the user to fill. But they have the option of clicking on a link that will move them to a new page and allow them to upload a picture, then they click on my back link to resume the form. But when you go back to the form all the values have been erased that were entered (because clicking on the upload picture link does not submit the form). I guess in this instance I WANT the page to use cache...how do I force this? Is there anywhere to retain these values without using a temp table? I haven't had any luck with using session variables and forms, from my experience form fields will not overwrite session variables, maybe I'm using them wrong? Thanks in advance!

here's a potential solution, using javascript you make a button and include this value - onclick="document.history.back()" This refereces the last page the user came from and should maintain any info they had there.

yes..I thought of that..problem is i am having to add ?upload=true when I call the previous form again. I have to pass that parameter back so that the form shows the new image when they go back. So I can't just do a back function...ugh what a mess!

I suggest using $PHP_SELF with this type of format... In my personal applications values always stayed in the text fields.
