Secure file transfer

I need to have upload and download section on my page and was wondering a secure manner to implement this wether it be via ftp or another method. Can I use a combination of FTP and encryption algorithm. I really have no clue on the related security issues so any info would be of great help.

However, if your users are all well-known to you (and vice-versa) you can probably dispense with with certificate and just generate your own standalone certificate. All the the certificate authorities really are guaranteeing is that "you" are approximately who you claim to be.

Interesting, this is the case with me...how does one go abouts creating their own digitial certificate
