Don't know how to use "exec" function

Hi,

Is that the "exec" function can do the command in the console mode ? If yes, how to do that ?

My problem was that i want to use the "fax" function in the PHP, but this function must be run in root. Therefore, how can i use the "exec" function to log into the root and then do the "fax" function ?

Is that really be done ? If not, any other method can do this kind of thing ?
