Hi Folks!

Is there a way to test if the client has turned off cookies? (please! don't say that I have to use sessions!)

Cookies are sent in the headers, stored by the client, and sent by the client on the subsequent requists to your server.

Thus, the simplest way of testing for cookies is to set a cookie and see if you can retreive it on the next request.

You can use headers to set the cookie (search the forum) and you can use the same header to force the client to do a new request to your site immediately, thus sending the cookie if is was set.

OK. Aside from the obvious reply of test using the send and see-if-you-can-retrieve method, there is another option I thought I would mention.

Although I usually use session variables (due to security reasons), I do recognize that there is a time and place for cookies. In these instances, I also would highly recommend placing prominant messages telling readers that cookies are required to use your page. This method avoids problems later (and readers emailing you asking why their page doesn't work).

Good point, especially since sessions sometimes also use cookies :-)
