showing new links

Is it possible to set an image next to a link when the link has been updated. I want to have all my updated links automatically showing they're new/updated with a graphic, but am unsure if it's possible or not. I know you can set up a function to check the modification date/time, but how do you call that function on each link? any help for this dazed and confused person would be much appreciated!!

I don't know how to creat the function but set it up to return true if you want the graphic to appear then:
