search mysql database

I need to be able to search a database field for a match and then display all matches.

I guess I need to go from a form, where I can enter the text and hit submit.

The text from the form, will be placed in the search sql statement, such as:
SELECT * FROM ?tablename WHERE "text from form"=?fieldname.

I have examples where you query the database, but I can't edit the sql statement each time I have a different query.

whether i got this right or not i dunno so i am just going to say this: make a query function that you can reuse. that way you can just change the variable values to make new queries without having to rebuild a sql statement each time you want one.

Sorry, I guess I was somewhat confusing. We have a database which contains information broken down by vendor, which list all his equipment, model #, serial #, etc...
I need to have a page that the users can come in to the site, enter their command ID in a text box, and then display all the items that they have, so they can verify for accurancy.
I know the sql, but getting the entered text, to the sql statement is where I'm having a problem. I have only been working with php, mysql for a couple days and anxious to demonstrate.
Everything has been down on Windoze NT, I want to change that.
