age ol' topic: resizing photos

okay, im sure you more experienced guys have come across this before, but here it is again. I have pictures that I want to turn into thumbnails. The ratios have to be exactly proportionate to the actual size, but can't exceed my desired max thumbnail size. how do i do this.. this is question one.

okay, to take it a bit further resizing pixels doesn't do anything to the actual file size. How do I tone this down in proportion as well so I don't have 10 thumbnails at 2megs each in size? would i use php graphic library to do this (something I know absolutely nothing about)?

You can use imagecopyresize() or imagemagic.
