unpack bmp-files

hi-
i am trying to unpack a bitmap file into hexdata...in perl, it would look somehow like this:
my ($ident, $offset, $width, $hight, $bpp) =
(unpack("a2V6v2", $bmp))[0,3,5,6,8];

does anybody know how to implement this im php?

PHP supports a version of unpack, check the manual.

i know - my problem is actually different to what i said: i am trying to translate
"
($ident, $offset, $width, $hight, $bpp) =
(unpack("a2V6v2", $bmp))[0,3,5,6,8]
"

by saying
"$bpp = unpack ("a2ident/V6LONG1/VLONG2/VLONG3/VLONG4/VLONG5/VLONG6/v2short1");
"
but the output looks like "BM, ,536944641,538976288,538976424.." and so on, but it is supposed to look like
"BM,62,72,14,1".

I dont know how long the header is but cant you just get the whole file, read height and width from the header, then delete the header and you got what you want... .bmp is not a compressed format and is stored pixel by pixel...
