displaying image files

I am just learning how to use the GD library module included with php. How do I referrence where the pictures are located? I constantley see stuff like $picture = "pic.gif" but that's no help. what directory is 'pic.gif' in and how do i access it?

if this is on another website, how do i access it? i've tried using something like:

$pic = "http://www.name.com/images/pic.jpg";

... but i keep getting the error "unable to open file"

if you are using something such as $pic = "pic.gif" it all depends on how you use the variable.

for example
img src=http://www.design-monster.com/$pic
is different than
img src=$pic
this is your server main directory. now are you trying to open these images? just thru html like this or am i misunderstanding the question?
