From field using mail function

Using the mail() function, is there anyway to have an alias in the "From" field of an email message?

For example, I want the from field to read:
"From: Peppy Lepew" instead of "From: [e-mail]".

Do you know if it's possible to add field that doesn't normally exist in an email message?

For example, I received an email message today in Outlook Express and there was a field I had never before seen in the email header that read: "Organization" with the Org's name inside the text box.

Is it as simple as just adding it to the mail function like adding to the bcc or cc field? Will it work for any email software?

yep, to add an optional header just handle it like a bcc or cc field.

in outlook click on the file menu, then properties. under the details tab click on the message source button. now rip off headers to your hearts content.

and to answer your last question, no, not all headers are supported by all email clients. if you look for RFCs about email you can get a good idea of what most email programs are suppose to support.

I've been wondering how to do this myself, that is, change the "From:" field to something more suitable than what my web host provides.

But I do not see this "from" parameter for the mail function. There are only four parameters listed, and "from" is not one of them.

Could you elaborate on this please?

the fourth field for mail() can take any header normally used in emails.

example:
mail("[e-mail]", "the subject", "the message", "From: Peppy Lepew <[e-mail]>");
