GD Library gives BMP

Hi all

My site is with a web host who is enlightened enough to have PHP with the GD library. phpinfo() says that the GD Version is "between 1.3 and 1.6.1" (on apache version 1.3.9).

On returning a dynamically created GIF, I am receiving to my IE5.5 browser an uncompressed BMP image - 155Kb for 450x350 pixels - too large!!

Is there anything I should be calling to set the version of GD before creating the image to make a properly compressed GIF?

It is probably version 1.6+ that doesn't support gifs. Try creating a png and see if it works, that will tell you that it is 1.6 or above.

Hello, I had this problem to, with the newer GD that produces PNGs.
What I did was calling the PHP script from within an IMG tag, and did something like this:
... src="img.php?text=hello there friend!"...

The problem is the spaces between the text. In Netscape it won't even display more than the second word, and IE will then only show it as bmp (when you try to save it you will see).

Just do this instead:
... src="img.php?text=hello%20there%20friend!"...
the %20 is a space in, ahhh... unicode or whatever they call it.
