Expression problem....

I am trying to do an ereg check on usernames when the join to only allow alphanumerics, underscores, and spaces. I must be missing or misunderstanding some part as it doesn't seem to be capturing properly.

Little help?

if ($username = ereg("^[a-zA-Z0-9_ ]?$", $username)) {
'accept username';
}
else {
'username invalid';
}

note : there was a lot of code removed from the if and else, just the basic idea given between apostrophes.

To get this to work, simply replace the '?' with '+'.

The question mark makes the ereg() return true for exactly 0 or 1 matches.

The plus makes ereg() return true for 1 or more matches.
