Need help with chat programming

Hi!

I am not very experienced PHP programmer and my current work is to make a chat room by using PHP. So how is it possible to avoid the message window to blink when refreshing? I have seen some chats with that option and usually these chats are 'commercial'. So what is the trick? :-)

we coded a chat room using Perl about six months ago and that chat works like those 'pro' style products 🙂.

I don't have knowledge about Flash and I am not experienced Java coder so those possibilities are not suitable at the moment. I have to continue seeking the chat script with 'continuous reload' 🙂

actually, there's a php lib for the irc protocol. i know they're the "competition" but I'd suggest going to php wizards since tobias covered it in the New Riders book.
