Cookies expiration time....

I am having some difficulties defining an expiration date long into the future in my cookies....
All I do is make a var lik:
$time = time() + (36584500012*30) ;

then when I set the cookie, i write:
setcookie("testvar", $val, $time, "/", ".mydomain.com") ;

This only seems to produce a session cookie that disappears when the browser is closed...

earlier I used a cookie that only lasted for eight hours, and I had no problem doing that.

Now, this damn cookie won`t set.
If u have an idea, or been in the same situation yourself, please reply to this post! I am running out of options here...

Also: Is it possible to set a cookie lifetime to be infinite...?

I use cookies a lot, and have found the best set & delete methods to be:

setcookie("CNAME","DATA",time()+180000, "/");

This will set a cookie called CNAME for 180000 seconds (about 2 days)

setcookie("CNAME","",time()-180000, "/");

This will delete the cookie (setting it to expire 2 days ago)

I have had trouble setting cookies more than about 10 days (in PHP3) and have not tested it in PHP4. Easier to stick with a 2-3 day timeout.

You can set a cookie that lasts a long time.

One of the ways to do is to use mktime() function, which will generate number of seconds, which you will then add to the setcookie() function.

I have tried that.
And I used time()+xxxx, and that didn`t work either. Every time I tried to set the cookie far in the future, it became a session cookie.
very annoying,...

You`re right! about ten days seems to be the limit! This is very annoying, I need do a workaround then...

If I want to "revive" a cookie everytime a "cookieholder" is visiting my site.

Then all I have to do is..

setcookie("cookname", "cookval", $newtime, "/") ;
?>

... erase the cookie, and then set it again? Only this time with a renewed time-value?

Don't need to delete it and recreate it, just run the setcookie with the time again and it'll reset the counter.

You can set an expiration date to some point in the future use date and mktime. I've opted to use gmdate and have it add the GMT at the end for the sake on consistency in timing (their lovcal time vs. your server time doesn't matter if you're specifying GMT)

The following creates a cookie date value for one year in the future.
gmdate("l, d-M-Y H:i:s \G\M\T", mktime (0,0,0,gmdate("m"), gmdate("d"), gmdate("Y")+1))
