File Uploading

Hello,
I am trying to create a place where people can upload files. I have all the code, except that the variable that holds the file name is coming back as "none" The variable name is the_file. When I see what $the_file_name is it come back with the correct filename, and also type. But when I just do $the_file it comes back as "none".

I read somwhere that the variable get's autogenerated and appends the _name. Might be what's happening
