why is it that when i use fopen to open up a text file on my server and then try to echo its content, i ALWAYS get "Resource id #1"

where is this coming from and how do i echo the contents of my text file? do I use fopen? fpassthru? or fread?

fread brings me to another point: my text file is very big. How do i make it support large character sizes?

well you obviously do have some problems concerning file handling 🙂 Lets try to solve at least some of them:
fopen() only gives you a file-handle, it does not give you any file-content, you need the file handle for nearly all functions concerned with file handling ...
fpassthru(file-handle) echos the file specified by the file-handle to the browser (your default-output)...
fread(file-handle, length) gives you a string that contains the part of the file you specified by file-handle and the length parameter...
fread() works fine for me, so the question is: how big is your txt-file ?! If you are experiencing problems with fread() because the file is too big, then you should try something like fgets() but managing really big files is behind my knowledge so i can't help you with that (go and ask vincent 🙂)
