database access

Hi,
I am very new to PHP, I've been Perl men so far byt I would love to make a start with it as I read a lot of good things about it.
I will be most greatful if someone could help me to code a very simple database query performed on 1 table (MySQL) and displaing its content as HTML page.
It would be even better if the access to the database would be password protected so thet user will have to log-in.
All and any help will be greately apreciated.

do a search at google or on this site and you wil be amazed at how many results you get on this common subject...

To password protect it you will either need to use .htaccess on the server or write a script that sets a session or something
if the user and pass are true.
