What is the correct file path syntax for writing to a directory immediately below the current one?

For example, suppose I am in a directory called Test, and I want to write to a file called Data.txt in a directory one level below Test called Temp.

Is the syntax for the file name as:

"/Temp/Data.txt"

or should it be:

"../Temp/Data.txt"

I've tried both ways, but neither one works. Can't remember my UNIX :-)

/ is back to the top,
../ is one dir up,
and ./ is the current dir.

But, as you already are in the current dir, you shouldn't have to tell php that, so "Temp/data.txt" should work.

The way Windows Me is running for me lately, I'm about ready to give Linux a shot. So I'll need to dig up the UNIX stuff again.

WinMe won't let my run Access 97, keeps screwing around with my VB 6 dlls, crashes when I switch between AOL and my GTE account and generally hoses the entire machine when Norton Anti-virus is ready to update (yeah, some feature that is, I turned it off). And I don't even want to go into the problems I am having with Black Ice and the blue screens of death.

Now I hear, of all things, that Microsquish is not going to be releasing any service "patch" for Me. They want you to go to their web site at support.microsoft.com/support/ and figure out from there what you need to fix. Great, just great.

Rumor has it that they are getting ready for a release early next year of some new O/S code named "Whistler." So I guess their attitude is the hell with WinMe. You suckers (like me) were dumb enough to buy it so you're stuck with it, ha, ha, ha.

Yes, I can just see this "Whistler" leaving us all whistling in the dark. But at least the picked a code name that made sense. Fits their "our customers ARE our beta testers" philosophy.

be warned that linux is very much a "roll yer own" os... although Mandrake is pretty smooth and has a graphical widget for, literally, everything.

On a picky note. It's a good idea to get in the habit of preceeding command execution of programs in your current directory with ./ The reason for this is that your account has a path of directories it looks in for commands you type (you can see the list by doing echo $PATH) If you are in a directory called /usr/src/foo and that directory contains a command called "dostuff" and you want to be sure that you are running the "dostuff" in that directory and not the one in, say, /usr/local/bin, then type ./dostuff and the right stuff will be done.

Most Linux distro's have a graphical interface to the installation and configuration these days...

Egads, whistler... or windows XP (ExPerience) have a look at the MS website and be horrified :-)

Good point about the './' though. It may not occur often, but it can really crack your brain when it does.
