Format URL and Email Addresses

If I have a string of text, say:

$mystring = "The quick brown fox has a web page at http://www.quickbrownfox.com. You can email him at [e-mail]. ";

How do I format it as follows:

$mystring = "The quick brown fox has a web page at <a href="http://www.quickbrownfox.com">http://www.quickbrownfox.com</a>. You can email him at <a href="mailto:[e-mail]">[e-mail]</a>. ";

You just need to "escape" the quotes(") with slashes().

$mystring = "The quick brown fox has a web page at <a href = \"http://www.quickbrownfox.com\">http://www.quickbrownfox.com</a>. You can email him at <a href = \"mailto:[e-mail]\">[e-mail]</a>.";

My fault, I did not explain it correctly. I have a string that I obtained from the database which contains these urls and email addresses. i need to surround them with the appropriate href html code.

Ah okay.

Assuming you get email and url from db as :

$email(minus mailto🙂 and $url (minus http://)

then here is your NEW string....

$mystring = "The quick brown fox has a web page at <a href = \"http://$url\">$url</a>. You can email him at <a href = \"mailto:$email\">$email</a>.";

Remove the http:// and mailto: if those are stored in your database (be easier on your db if they weren't).

I am trying to do the same thing as the original poster (I think) I have built a message forum, and when it shows the messages, if the message contains a URL I want the forum to link it to open in a new window if clicked.

I have tried the explode(" ",$message); but not all messages have a blank space before the URL...any advice? I am getting confused...

Try the following code:

$msg = preg_replace("/((http(s?):\/\/)|(www.))([\S.]+)/i",
'<a href="http\3://\4\5" target="_blank">\2\4\5</a>', $msg);

$msg = preg_replace("/([\w.]+)(@)([\w.]+)/i",
"<a href=\"mailto:$0\">$0</a>", $msg);

This will add the tags to http and mailto urls within a string. The http urls will load in a separate window.
