A question about the timestamp

Hi!

I am coding a guestbook/forum combination. Now I need to get a timestamp (no, not an updating clock, just a stamp). How can I do it? I tried to use date-function but that makes the whole thing work like a clock 🙂, so when a new message was posted, all timestamps were updated and that isn't fun for coder ;-).

So please give me some solutions / answers / examples for that timestamp-problem.

I heard that the timestamp which is saved when the msg is posted has to be stored somewhere for later use (use in forum page), but more precisely please 🙂

Are you using a database or plain files?

just plain files, I don't have a database server at the moment 🙁
