LDAP authentication in PHP

Just a practical question:
"How do you do authentication against LDAP in PHP?"
I think, there are two approaches:
1) Do ldap_compare on attribute userPassword.
2) Open next connection and try to authenticate.
Which one is commonly used? Or is it done another way?
