using a file's icon...

My download script is coming along nicely. I have an idea, but I'm not sure if PHP is even capable of doing it. As it stands now, my script will gather files from a directory and create links to the files. I want to be able to use the file's built in icon in the page. So instead of being only a text link, the php would get the icon from the file and put it in the page.

You'd have to write some kind of program (either as a PHP extension or as a standalone executable) that could extract an icon from a Windows executable. This could either be run once to extract the icon and leave it on disk as a GIF, PNG or JPEG, or else on-the-fly. Figuring out the URL for the latter might be interesting, but basically you'd use an IMG tag as usual and point it at a php script with params that indicated which EXE and which icon number.

Uh - icons are also OS dependant. So if you're running PHP on Linux, you might have X-Windows icons... just something to think about.
