I know in Javascript there is a way to prevent the right click, so I was wondering if there is a php function that prevents the browser from Back | Stop | Reload?

I encountered this problem as well, (for a game that uses "hitpoints", for example Nick, reload would be a bad thing) Vala and exhausted quite a bit of time looking for an answer.

In short : even with Javascript you can't completely block Back | Reload | Stop. The right click thing you are talking about can be surpassed by holding down the right buttone WHILE clicking with the left to say OK and THEN releasing the right would give you the popup script. And even if you found a way to stop the mouse, what would stop your users from pressing F5 (refresh) or backspace (Back)?

This is a behavior that you should never circumvent. It's just really poor practice and I'm saddened to see that it seems to come up at least once a day. You should design a different solution instead.

If people didn't try to cheat at everything I probably never would have tried. But when you have a game that employs hitpoints and real time fighting..."Refresh" really really screws things up thanks to cheaters.

I eventually used 5 seperate functions (and 6 weeks of mental strain trying to figure out how to "stop" cheaters) to see if the user had tried to "refresh" himself back to full health again.

To "fix" the problem, I eventually had to :

Log all users as they entered a "match" into a "current" table in a database that captured who logged in, who they were fighting, day, time and match #. I would also pass that match# as a hidden field (for later).
Check database on logging into a match to see IF they had a match in progress. IF one was found a loss was assigned to them and a win to the opponent and "current" table was updated with new information.
At match's end, when the results of it were submitted I updated the "current" table so no match was viewed as in progress.

THEN to prevent "refreshing" to regain their full health again.

ON page UNLoad I :
4. Increase the match # by 1 as a hidden variable back to the page again.

And when page loaded I would check that the match # was the same as the one in the database. IF not, then, that page was "refreshed".

And that is the "quick" answer. IF anyone out there anywhere knows of a BETTER way to do this, please please please tell me. 🙂)

Ken, first of all, don't take this so much to the heart 🙂.

secondly, I don't see why there aren't functions that should be able to do this. for what I'm doing(and seems like many others), it would be great if the the back, stop, forward, and refresh buttons could be disabled and appear "grayed out" on the gui. I'm new to php, and it seems more powerfull the jscript, but doesn't go as far as a powerful scripting language like phyton.

Hey, for creating a realtime game on top of a protocol and client designed for hypertext documents with embedded graphic images, I'd say you've done pretty well!

The real answer is to write your own client in Java: it can still run inside the browser, but you could control just about everything. I'm not saying this would be easy...

That idea occurred to me many times as well, but having absolutely no experience in using Java in any climate (save javascript...ya I know..🙂 ) I am sure the time needed in learning how to use yet another language would have my wife in fits (and a divorce lawyer office heh). 🙂

Now, if you know of any Java programmers that believe they have wayyyy too much time on their hands and want to work for nothing(well not nothing exactly..the endless bitching of unhappy teens makes for terrific laughter some times) then I suppose that option might become more viable. (And before anyone else says something about this - "I am just kidding")

PHP is entirely server side. It cannot do anything to your client.
