Question on Remote Database Access ??

Is is possible to access a SQLServer database situated in a Remote machine with just specifying the IP address of the remote machine and not the port number ??
Cuurently the database in the remote machine is not set to have a port number and so connection to the database locally is possible. But what when I connect from a remote machine ?? Do I need to have a port number to connect ??
