Changing Session Variables

Hi there,
I hope this question hasn't been asked too many times before, but believe me I've looked.

I want a link on my page to simply change (increment) a session variable and call the page again to refresh the display, but I don't want info in the URL. Can this be done? Is this a dumb question? Currently I have to call the page with href=$php_self?var=2 for example.

The only way i know of is to use a form; i don't think it's possible with a normal link.

I guess having a var++; line at the top of the page isn't what you want (this would increment each time the page was 'refreshed/loadeded?
The only other way I can think of is to point the link to a seperate script that increments your var and then relocates you to the original page.
Like this

Page_1
//some stuff
<a href ="page2.php">follow this</a>

page_2.php
<?
$counter++;
header("location: page_1.php");
?>

I've not tried it but barring any silly errors I think it would do what you need.
