PHP stopped

Came to use php on our Suse 6.2 linux intranet today and nothing! Checking the httpd error log I saw the message

'address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to port 80'

So, for a quick fix (and because Captain Big Boss is breathing down my neck for a result) I changed the apache httpd.conf file so that the bind address was 8080 rather than 80. This allowed my to bring up .htm files with http://www.our-domain:8080/pageineed.htm. However, any .php pages won't load. Any ideas would be much appreciated before I go nuts.

something is using port 80 on the box, look for orphaned apache processes. if all else fails restart the box and put apache back on port 80. php pages should still load if nothing changed in the apache httpd.conf file
