php-mysql newbie problem!!!!

hi,
i have recently installed LM 7.2 with tha distribution rpm of apache,php4,mysql...
php goes well itself,but...i cannot connect with mysql.
i also installed mysql.so,the php.ini(or the http.conf...i don't remenber now!)
recalls it...but...nothing!
what does it mean?
could anyone help a desperate getting lost newbie from italy?

can you connect your mysql database with phpmyadmin ,mysqladmin or any other interfaces ?

if you can get connected with any of them then check your mysql_connect() and mysql_select_db() statements. Be sure that your password ,location ,username statements are ok and you're trying to connect an existing database...

else?

well...yesterday something strange happened!
i reinstalled apache and php and...now it works fine!
i don't know why, but i think because(maybe)i altereted some file(http.conf or php.ini...), or maybe because during the new installation i forced some unexpected modules(!?) and after i got them off!....
well, i cannot understand...life is strange and beautiful...
i thank you very much really anyway
