thought of that also..
I think the process would be to..
1. find a dictionary in some type of delimeted format, break down by first letter.
2. create a db with tables a-z
3. create function/sql statement that checks every word and make sure that it is found in the dictionary db, if not, highlite in color and create link on mispeled word.
4. misspeled word/link would take you to a function/sql that would use sql querry LIKE and find matches.
5. then use erreg_replace function..

It would, but you'd have to pay for it. Either in money or speed. I would definately not do it in PHP.

It is pretty easy to do, use ispell. There are also some built in functions for aspell but I could not get that to properly install on my server so I used ispell with exec calls. Basically you read in your text, pipe it to ispell with an exec call and then read back the results, which may be no suggestions or several suggestions. As long as you keep a pointer to where you are in the text you should be able to go through word by word and get what you want. With longer text entries it takes alittle bit to go through everything but I have done quite a bit of testing and the end user does not notice any major lags whatsoever.

ispell is a system dictionary found on a many UNIX OSes that are out there. And if it is not installed by default, you can find it easily through a search through google. Ispell is the first generation but the one that I had the best luck with on Solaris. Aspell has built in PHP functions, not sure where they were added but you have to compile it in as a module I believe. Ispell comes with a variety of dictionary files in a hash format. Currently I have a site supporting 12 languages so it is pretty robust and easy to use.
