Multiple instances of a site.

At the moment I make use of the wilcard function of dns to determine wat site
I am on.

I do a ereg() to determine what site is called and then I generate
the website. Select the title, news, etc.

For every page that is requested, I look up the ID of the site that is called.

If the ID is found the news will be selected for this site out of 1 table called 'news'.

If the requested url is http://www.mysite.com, I ignore the ID and simply
select all the news there is.

The Idea is to make one big parent portal site, branched out to not so big children portal sites and keep it all in one database.

My Question:

How can I make this work on a site which doesn't support wildcards ?

Easiest way to do this is have a copy of the index script named, say, section.

Now, in .htaccess (make sure you have override on for files) and use the ForceType directive.

<File /directory/to/script/section>
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</File>

Now, this forces PHP to execute the script and you can treat it like a directory. Say if you went to:

Your querystring would look like either /site1 or /site2
