Hi there,
where can I find some code snippets to help me developping the following functionality :

add in a portal like a link to a file by pushing the button browse adn travel in my drives and selecting the file. the result would be in mysql and shown as a hyperlink to the real file ... it is like creating a shortcut to a file ..

There is something like that, called FTP.

I don't remember FTP being able to insert files directly in to an SQL database, but I might be wrong. 😉

Ok, I got it a bit wrong, hey, I'm PHP-Bot 1.0 but...

which sounds like "I want to browse my disks and select a file" which FTP does.

Anyway, there are ton's of HTML editors out there that let you do just that: browse your disk, select a file, and include a hyperlink to that file in your html code.

You don't need a database or that... well, unless you want to automate the checking to see if the files still exist... but then again, if it's a portal site you'd probably have hundreds of links, all coming from your database... that could be a busy server if you get popular.

"I want to browse my ftp server and select a file" - now that's FTP 🙂

If that's what he wants, then he's best off using the directory functions, which can do exactly that, and very quickly.

Like I said, I misunderstood what he said, poo happens.

I thought he wanted to create a webpage where users could browse his disks and select files for download. That's FTP with a capital F.

Anyway, he could still use ftp, because in order to get the files to be displayed they'd have to be in the documentroot in the first place. Agreed, directory functions would be a lot simpler and faster, but they don't work on remote servers, FTP does.

They don't have to be in the document root (remember PHP can see other places, too). This debate is going on far longer than anyone thought, so I'm just gonna shut up 🙂

Yes PHP can see outside the documentroot, but the webserver can't.

He said he wanted to add a link to the file, so I assume he'd want to link directly to a file...
