As I was looking through the "File uploads made easy" article I noticed this line

$error .= "\n<li>" . $registered_types[$type] . " (" . $type . ")</li>";

can someone tell me what roll the " . " plays? I've seen this used else where but haven't been able to figure out its use.

The '.' is a concatenation symbol.
If you want to concatenate 2 strings you can use something like this:

<?
$FirstString="i am";
$SecondString=" a concatenated string";
$ConcatenatedString=$FirstString . $SecondString;
print($ConcatenatedString);
?>

to ask a further question: I've seen the "." used to print variables when there is no actual concatenation of more than one string involved. What is the point of that?

You can also use the "." in output's as well. i.e. print("this is from the variable ".$variable." that you are seeing");

why not just use
print("this is from the variable "$variable" that you are seeing");

I'm still not quite sure as to what the . does for output.
