chown() Help!!!

I'm Creating Dir on the fly and copying sevral files to that dir. By doing this I'm Losing Ownership of the dir. I was told to use chown() function. I looked this function up but theres very little on it, if someone can help me to understant this use of the function i would appreciate it.

chown(ownership, filename);
<future owner><file(s) or/and directories(s)>

What is going to happen to the file?
What type of ownership options do I have?
How do I know if the execution was sucessful?
