Passing variables between pages?

Hi All
I have read alot about this but I just wanna know what the best and cleanest way is to pass variables between pages so they can be used on other pages.
so instead of url's appearing like the following and looking ugly
http://www.foobar.com/foo/select.php?msg=Please%20choose%20a%20manufacturer%20from%20the%20menu%20below.&man_select=&cat_select=All

is there a better way than appending onto the url?
i have also tried hidden text fields but that is iffy too!
maybe sessions?

would appreciate any help....thanks

Hi,

If you don't have a lot of links on that page you can use post instead.
In this case your page would have to have as many forms - as many links you actually have,.. and also all those hidden fields too.
For submit you can use what ever from the standard button, image,... or a simple text link to do that post also.

Please note that with this solution your script is gonna become a bit heavier, depends on the quantity of those hidden fields for each link.

For an elegant job I prefer this one, but when you actually have 100's of links Iìm not sure if you would appritiate this kind of elegance. ;-) Than also if your site is even graphical,... you'll gonna have to fight with spacer.gif & form itself if you don't know how they react on those changes beetween each other.

Depends on what are you trying to do?
You even might save all that in a session, in a cookie, in a db,...
But if I understood correctly "Those pages aren't generated dinamicly right?" In this case the last three won't serve you much, it requires a bit more work after all.

I would also like to see if there's another way of doing it. ;-)

Use sessions if you can live with a few parameters in the URL,

Or simply use a hidden frameset and forget all that sh*te about POST methods for simple links.

Sure. & if the provider can not support some ss languages?!!
That much about the session. But in this case can suppot php fortunatelly. Lucky you. ;-) & if the js is off & the browser can not support frames you lose the customer, because you didn't use my sh*ite method for posting.

Well I can live with that critic. I'm very democratical, cause it ain't the best solution after all (that post method), but at least won't make you lose some of your important potential customers. Nothing to risk & it works always. No matter what. :-) ;-) 8)

& than also with frameset you can only hide the upper part of the browser (url bar) & def. not the lower that will be displayed anyway with a funny long url.

Who cares? the frames method works for any url with or without any scripting behind it.
The POST method however allways needs some CGI interface to work.ALLWAYS.

Javascript is not used for frames.
If a browser does not support frames, it will load the url asif it was a normal URL. That means the location bar will be messy, but the site will work.

& than also with frameset you can only hide the upper part of the browser (url bar) & def. not the lower that will be displayed anyway with a funny long url.

And that is completely irrelevant.

You can collect that data even with a simple javascript, & some other client stuff thing scripts. If you didn't know js is also an object oriented language. 8)

If a browser does not support frames, it will load the url asif it was a normal URL. That means the location bar will be messy, but the site will work.

So, what did you solve with that?!! He asked how to hide that stuff, didn't he?!! As I remember he didn't ask how to complicate it, trying to hide it and at the end to achive nothing, but a bunch of funny semi hidden effects with visitors that can only think that the site was created from some Mickey Mouse Webmaster from the planet "Frames"

Ya, and in that case you are using Javascript as CGI.
Point is, you can't use the POST method withouthaving some sort of script to handle the data.

And why are you suggesting javascript, you yourself said that using javascript might lockout some users who have javascript disabled...

And a hidden frame hides all the URLs from the location bar. I thought you'd be well aware of this because it has been posted as a solution a few hundred times right here on this forum.
Just create a frameset consisting of one frame and make that frame as big as possible.

Here you go again with javascript.
Isn't that complicated? using javascript to build frames and using javascript to capture the data from the user's clicks? What do you need PHP for anyway?

Well, the frames method is the simplest method because you create the frames once, and from there your old site works 100% perfect inside that frame, no modifications required.

Some people just don't like simple solutions I guess 🙂
