how to use mcrypt function

Dear friend,
I have install php mcrypt function but i don't know how to use it. Could anybody tell me the step how to encrypt data using mcrypt. I have try to look at the example in php document but i cannot understand. So anybody who could help me with show me step by step or they have a link to example or have source code that i can take a look at it.
