PDF: Set background color for text

Fetching data into rows, I want odd rows having a background gray value. Is there some easy way to solve this combining PDF functions?

I tried generating PDF from HTML, but now the problem is that the PDF file which is generated doesnt have colors at all.. not even the text colors, the Program just generates a Black & White PDF,
Can any one tell me what should be done to get colors in the PDF File,
I have compiled HTML2PS(1.0 B3) & PS2PDF on my Linux machine
