How do you parse emails with PHP?

I would like to make a mini help desk system. So i need to make a script to fetch email to a mySQL databse. I pipe the emails going to helpdesk in the /etc/aliases to a phpscript that does it. How do i write one? where do i start? is there suck scripts already written?
