retrieving multiple rows from database

how do i retrieve multiple rows from mysql database using php.i tried using the follwoing but it keeps retreiving the first record again and again.
$res=mysql_query(\"$sql\",$coonect_id);#coonect_id connects to my database
$data=mysql_fetch_array($res);
for($i=0;$i<=mysql_affected_rows($res);$i++)
{
print \"$data[0]\";
print \"$data[1]\";
print \"$data[2]\";
}
even if my sql query returns 4 rows the above fetches the first record 4 times but does not fetch 4 diff records tht were returned by query

Try using a while loop

Sample will be something like this:

while ($data=mysql_fetch_array($res) ){
do some stuff here
}
