sessions, again

I may be a bit stupid, but after going through the n postings regarding sessions, i still don't know how to help myself.
all i need is a way of getting the session id of a user who logs on to an application, this login information is stored in a db. now if a user logs on with this info, i write his session id to the db, and set a flag online. but if he logs on again i need to know these things:
a) is it him AGAIN? (second browser window ie) and the session is still active
b) is it him and he did not logout correctly?
did the session stop?

if anyone can describe how to do this (in simple words 🙂 i'de be forever grateful.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but it sounds like you can get the current session id by using session_id().

When a user logs out correctly, insert code to delete that session_id from the database. That way you know they have indeed logged out correctly. If you want to check if it is him again (an incorrect logout) or whatever, query the database to see if you can match the current session_id() with what is in the database.

ahm, principally yes. but it's not exactly what i'm looking for. i already have the current session id in the db. what i need is a function that makes sure the session is still running, the user probably sometimes forgets to log out correctly. so i need to know if the session is still active, and if not, i need to remove the online flag and the session id. but how exactly can i check if the session is still active?
