executing php when a file is requested

hi,

what i want to do is execute php when any file in a certain directory is requested. so before the file is accessed a php logic executes.

how would one do this? apache .htaccess? or an apache handler?

i've seen this somewhere before but i can't remeber where.

You can have php parse any document in your webserver root.

But you cannot execute code.
I'm guessing you are trying to make some kind of log file?

what you CAN do is create a custom CGI-handler wich does whatever you would want in the code...

What I'm trying to do is secure files that usrs have uploaded so that even if someone knows the URL they can just download the file.

In other words think of an mp3 server (this will also be one of it's uses) where users can see where the file is, but if they try access it directly I can re-route them to another page. Ditto with other file types.

I know this is possible, and i've even see it discussed here, but i can't remember what does the trick.
