Two PHP Questions...

...okay I'm writing some scripts for basic administration of a website we're working on here at work, and I've been told to add two features I'm not totally sure on implementing:

• Sending email

We have a simple system for adding and managing users. I've been asked to send a simple email message to the administrator of the site every time a user signs up. Is there any easy way to just send a quick paragraph of text to a given email address? I know very little about the internals of how email works.

• Resolving an IP

I wrote up a tracking system that logs information about users who view the site, including IP. I've been asked to resolve this IP to more readable info, presumably the same thing as an ident in an IRC client. I'm not sure how to go about doing this.

Any help on these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

...shortly after posting this I found out about the mail () function. I certainly pulled a "RTFM" on this one. 😃 Heh, I was just in a hurry cuz this is for work and forgot about typical webboard manners. 😃

Anyway, the IP question still stands.

PHP's mail() function makes sending mail ridiculously easy. Look it up in the manual at php.net.

As far as address resolution, I'm not certain, but I belive there are ways to resolve an IP into something like node.branch.provider - Check the articles. I remember seeing something like this.

Well, the HTTP variable $REMOTE_ADDR contains the user ip.
