Problem with newlines and <br> tags

Hey guys-
I have a section on my site where people can upload fanfic to my server. This creates a php file that is supposed to replace newline (\n) characters with <br> tags through the following code:
$content=readfile('file.txt');
$content=nl2br('$content');
echo $content;
But it doesn't work. Example: say if the text file contained
"Once upon a time there was a dog called freddie.
Freddie had no friends.
Ahhhh, poor Freddie."
That's how I'd want it to be displayed. Instead it al just spews across the page in one big fat long ugly line.
Any ideas what I can do?

you should type the code what can filter that text file.

you included this:

so you would make 'string function' what can put '<br>' each end of line in text file before print

but I'm sorry
I don't know how to solve that problem..
I mean I can't tell you that code

Uhm...readfile just returns a file to the browser - not to a variable. So, your content variable is actually empty. Try something like this:

$arr = file("file.txt");
$content = "";
foreach($arr as $a)
$content .= $a;

$content = nl2br($content);
echo $content;
