MySQL is making me crazy

I realize this is a PHP discussion, but MySQL docs suck. I had to shut down my MySQL server. When I try to bring it back up, I get :

/usr/local/mysql/libexec/mysqld: ready for connections

but then I never get a prompt back. If Iend my session or ^C out, it stops the sever again. How do I start the damn server and keep it running?
