Menu thing

I'm a total newbie at PHP, but here's a question:

I know how to include a menu.phtml in my site, and I'm using it at the moment. Now I'd like to know if one thing is possible.
Here's an example what I mean:

I have three links, Link 1 which is link to page1.php, Link 2 to page2.php and Link 3 to page3.php. Now, when I click e.g. Link 2, and the page2.php is open, the Link 2 in the menu.phtml isn't a link anymore, it just appears there as text.

Please give me the code if you know it / it is even possible.

I explained it this way because my english isn't so good, hope you understood and can help me.

To make this thing more clear, look at this site too, when you are in the "Forums" section, the background color is different. How is it possible to do this??

I didn't get that exactly, but make sure the "just text" is actually a link...

For the background having a different colour...

etc...

Well, in your menu file, you'll need to check what the current page is (By using $PHP_SELF) and when you're generating links, do something aling these lines:

if the link I'm generating is NOT equivalent to the current page, print a link. Else, just print the text for that link.

You get the idea.

Important Note about $PHP_SELF...

If passing variables such as ?id=test in the URL, $PHP_SELF will not give these!

At least, it never does for me anyway :-)

if you want to use $QUERY_STRING, note:

use "get" as the form method, otherwise there is no querystring
when using $QUERY_STRING inside a function, don't forget to set it a global variable before use: global $QUERY_STRING;
