Updating MySQL date field

I don't know if this is a Mysql question or a PHP question, but I'm losing hair over it.

I am trying to update a date field in my database. No matter what format I use, the date field gets overwritten with "0000-00-00".

I've tried stuffing a unix timestamp in there, a properly formatted text string, everything I can think of.

Any help would be appreciated...

why not simply change your field type to a tinytext and store the unix timestamp? Seems that it would be easier.

I've gotten the date field to store correctly before, but I've long since abandoned that method - I just use a tinytext/with the unix timestamp now. Much more flexible.
